Singing in the oral tradition

Simple songs, learned by ear.

This just means we learn by listening to each other. I offer a short phrase and the group sings it back. We repeat it, gradually weaving in layers and harmonies, until we don’t need to think about the song anymore and it settles into our bodies.

There’s nothing to read or remember. Just add your voice in whatever way feels natural, and let the repetition and the group hold the song.

Nothing to get right

No auditions. No performance. No particular way you have to sound.

Nightingale perched on a branch

The point isn’t to achieve anything. It’s to let your voice become part of the whole sound and feel what happens when you’re both making the song and being carried by it.

Your brain gets a well-deserved break, and you can settle into the experience of being inside the music rather than just listening to it from the outside.
