Frequently asked questions

I’ve never sung in a group before. Is that okay? +

Yes, absolutely! Our songs are learned by ear, following the oral tradition of call-and-response. Simply put, you just repeat after the leader. No prior singing experience is needed.

What kind of songs will we sing? +

At Songbirds, we focus on songs that nourish the soul, lift the spirit, and provide support on life’s journey. These are simple, “don’t make me think” songs that help us move from our heads into our bodies, allowing us to experience the joy and power of singing together.

Can I join if I don’t have children? +

Yes, definitely! Our Tuesday and Thursday morning circles welcome women of all ages and stages, with or without children, and non-binary people who feel comfortable in a women-centred space. Songbirds Sundays welcomes all ages and genders. Each offering’s page has details about who the circle is for.

Do I need to prepare for the sessions? +

There’s nothing to prepare, practice, or rehearse! Just come as you are. Whether you’re feeling tired, energized, or anywhere in between, you’re welcome exactly as you are.

What is the commitment? +

For our Tuesday and Thursday morning circles, we ask participants to commit to a full term so we can build community and our trove of songs. We offer a free taster for first-time joiners, and late registrations can be prorated. Other gatherings have their own registration arrangements; please check the individual offering’s page.

What if I’m running late? +

We know how much we’re all juggling. At our morning circles and Nightingales, come whenever you can — you’re welcome to join us along the way. For other offerings, such as Grief Songs, we ask you to arrive on time to help hold the shared space. Please check the start time on each offering’s page.
